Lies and nutrition labeling loophole: Serving size sleight of hand

For years, consumers and organizations Interested surveillance have been crying that the U.S. labeling laws are full of gaps and needs serious revision. After years of debate, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said they intended to ask something. But that be enough?

There are many issues of food labeling could complain, but a major problem (due to its relationship with the crisis of obesity) is the portion sizes.

I'm not just talking about supersizing. The worst thing is calories are hidden by active duty sleight of hand size. and I show you some examples:

Tostitos hint of lime. Calories per serving: 150. Not bad for tortilla chips, eh? Not so fast. Check the Serving Size: 1 oz June 1 chips are enormous. There are 10 servings per container. In 1500 calorie bag.

Most guys could go half the cooling bag 750 calories. Well, suppose you have some limitation and only eats one third of the bag (20 pieces). You still get 500 calories. But who stops six chips?

Vitamin Water. Although it might rant about how the sugar water is marketed as health food, I'll stick with the magic yet.

The label says there are 50 calories per serving. Wow, only 50 calories! Rather than add all the vitamins. Must be good for you and the perfect diet, right? Think again. Look at the size serving and servings per container: 8 ounces per serving and 2.5 servings per container.

Sorry, but is there any reason to 2.5 parts than for hide the real caloric content?

When you see the bottle is 20 ounces, one realizes that it contains 125 calories, 50. Although 20 ounces is a big bottle, I do not know many guys who do not eat everything.

Sobe Lifewater? same trick in 20 oz bottles

Healthy Choice Vegetable Soup countries. Them make these practices in some microwave containers with a plastic cap. Just heat and eat.

He says 90 calories and 480 mg of sodium per serving. Wow, less than one hundred calories. Wait a minute though. Put the jar around and see the cup is 1 and the number of servings per container said that "about 2.

Huh? It seems pretty obvious to me that this container microwaveable loans were designed for a person to eat at one sitting, why Why not save 180 calories per container on the label (and 960 mg of sodium). I guess the 90 calories and 480 mg Sodium sounds … well … as a healthier choice!

Ben and Jerry's chocolate brownie chocolate ice cream.

This delicious ice cream infamous facebook page with his own fan has 270 calories per serving.

We all know that ice cream is loaded with calories and should be a luxury that very few, but 270 calories per serving, is not too terrible is it?

Look a little closer to the label. The eastern part ½ cup. Who eats a half cup of ice cream? In fact, it has not educated themselves a pint?

According to Ben and Jerry, there are 4 servings in a pint container. After 4 servings 270 calories = 1080 calories! That's about half a day worth of calories for an average woman.

I could go on and on – cookies, chocolate cookies, muffins, pastries, cereal box (eating cereal ¾ cup) etc, but I think you get the point.

What is the solution to this mess? News reports last week that the FDA may be rampant. Tell me between those who are happy to hear this news. One of his ideas is to display nutritional information including calories, on the front label of food.

The problem is that the movement itself may actually worsen the situation. Suppose Tostitos began to send "150 calories per serving right in front of the bag. Most people assume that the chips are low in calories. Put the information in front of the label calories only if indicated clearly the amount of calories in the whole package or a standard treatment of human size!

Ah, but the FDA says they are above that, too. They also want to normalize or new size portions. Sounds good, but there are critics who say that consumers need to eat more servings approval so that the strategy would be counterproductive.

Suppose, for example, the government decided not to eat one and half a cup of Ben and Jerry, while they are the new size Serving a cup, or half the thumbnail container. Now, by law, the label says 540 calories per serving, instead of 270. Is it like getting official permission to eat twice?

I'm not against the latest initiative by the FDA, but we really need is a little honesty in labeling.

Manufacturers Food should not be allowed to manipulate the size of the portions in a way that you the mistaken idea that there are fewer calories than it really is an amount that is likely to eat.

Calories would be good for the whole package is on the label at a glance. A new rating scale for the energy density would cool too, if it could be easy to interpret. Also good to have the sizes of selected services for the quantities are more likely to be broad consumption. But the standardization of serving sizes for all types of food is difficult.

My European friends tell me that food labels 100g including parts to make comparisons easier. But considering how the needs of each individual daily caloric may vary (easily three or more occasions in which run the range from being completely sedentary to elite athletes, not to mention the differences between men and women), standardization, which applies to all world can not be possible.

I think the recent laws, such as the requirement of calories in restaurant menus as a positive measure will influence the behavior for some people. But no label change by themselves solve the obesity crisis. Real solution must include personal responsibility, education nutrition, self-discipline, work and lifestyle change.

The changes in labeling laws do not affect everyone because most people who can be interested in the labels the words are those that have already committed to change their lifestyles (and are less likely to consume processed and packaged foods – with tags – In the first place). In fact, for those concerned, all the information you need is already on the labels, just do a little math and towers Stealth label control.

There is no real solution to this distortion of the portions and the label is the problem: Calories awareness. Of course, this includes reading the labels of education, but goes much further. This is how I define "counting calories"

1. Get cons calories a good book, a table or an electronic device or software and know the calorie count of all basic foods you consume daily. Search values of calories you eat food from time to time.

2. Always have a plan of meals per day – on paper – to print the calories of each food, food every day. Use this menu as a daily goal and destination.

3. Meet the requirements of the average calories for men and women and learn to estimate their own calorie needs as closely as possible on their activity, weight, body composition, size, sex and age.

4. Getting a balance Cooking good food and use.

Keep counting the calories and nutrition by the numbers until you are unconsciously competent and eat the quantities right to maintain your ideal weight easily becomes second Nature.

Obviously, saying that calories are all there to nutrition is as to say that everything that is golf. quality and quantity of calories are important. However, it is a mistake to ignore the calorie side of the game. Portions question, not healthy foods are stored as fat if you eat too ..

You can play "archery blindfolded" guess the calories and portions food if desired. Hey, you might get lucky and guess. Personally, I would not recommend depending on the luck – or government – to something as important as your body and your health.
