According to studies done at the University of Mississippi the reason for the different colors of a deers antlers are caused by the type of bushes and trees the deer rubs his antlers on.The colors vary from light orange to almost black and to bone white.In the piney woods most deer will have some shade of orange horns due to the rubbing done mostly on pines. In the lower swamp lands the horns will have all 3 color variations, due to the varieties of trees in the lowlands. We have a small tree called a white wood that is snow white under the bark and the bark is almost white- the bucks that rub these trees will not have any stain on their horns and will produce ivory white antlers. The deer that rub on certain oaks will have the black horns because of the excess tanic acid in the bark. the orange horns come from cedars and pines. I am only repeating the results of the studies that were documented. But it does make sense to me.

Yes I do hunt and have ever since my grandfather gave me my first BB gun. It is a heritage that I have to say I am proud to have passed on to my kids as well.

I think it is admirable of you to say that although you do not hunt, that you understand the reasons for hunting and that you also eat the meat. There are a lot of people who just plain think it is wrong and that no one should hunt. I do not understand what makes one person condemn another for their personal choices as long as they don’t hurt other people.

Hunting does kill animals, but the anti hunters do not realize what will happen if the flocks and hurds are allowed to just over populate. The diseases and famine are horrific when viewed by those same tree huggers. This hunting process as you understand does serve a positive purpose, especially so as urban sprawl continues to take over natural habitat and forces the animals to be in contact that much more with humans.

This contact is terrible at times causing not only the death of many animals for instance with car and deer collisions, but also deaths of humans and destruction of vehicles and property, not to mention the increases we all see in our car insurance. Ask someone from MI or WI what they think about the number of deer in their states and you will hear that they are so over populated now and hunting isn’t catching up with the population growth.

I am glad you are able to see the other point of view even though you are not a hunter. It is refreshing to hear from someone who is not a hunter, but yet doesn’t seem to be against the practice either. Good for you!

The process of building products using wood as the primary material is called wood-working. This may also include the process of carving something from wood.

Wood was one of the first materials to be used by our ancestors. Along with mud, stone and parts from animals, wood were turned into tools. As civilizations develop, so did their tools. This is proportional to the degree of skills involved by the people of the civilization.

Wooden tools created by our primitive ancestors were located in Lehringen. Some spears were found in Germany. Wooden weapons for hunting and flint tools for carving show that primitive people were already knowledgeable on how to create materials that would help them obtain their needs.

There are two ancient civilizations that are often mentioned when woodworking is the subject matter. These are the Egyptians and the Chinese. This is because woodworking has been shown in their ancient sketches and drawings.

Also, a vast amount of Egyptian furniture like chairs, tables, beds, stools and chests have been encased in tombs. Preservation of such materials shows that the ancient Egyptian people were inclined to use wood. Coffins that were located in the tomb were also out of wood.

Egyptians used metal for their woodwork. Copper and bronze were the main tools for woodworking. These were turned into adzes, pull saws, axes, chisels and bow drills.

Ancient Egyptians were the first civilization to do veneering. They were also the first to use varnish, therefore resulting to what is now termed as “finishes.” They used native acacias and the wood from the sycamore and tamarisk trees.

As for the Chinese, wood working was said to have started when Lu Ban and his wife Lady Yun brought plane and chalkline to China. This was during the Spring and Autumn period. From them on, Lu Ban’s teachings were said to have been recoreded in the book “Lu Band Jing” or “Manuscript of Lu Ban.”

This was written 1500 years after he died. The book is complete with elaborate descriptions of the necessary dimensions in building different kinds of furniture like tables, altars and flower pots.

In the modern times, these are the tools a woodworker must possess:

* Measuring and Marking tools _ protractor, tape measures, rules – scratch awls, marking knives, marking gauges – plane gauges in order to figure out how flat the surface it – hygrometers in order to figure out how much water the wood has – levels – winding sticks – combination squares, try squares, straightedges

* Cutting tools – hands saws like the rip saw, cross cut saw, keyhole saw, bow saw, coping saw, tenon saw, gent’s saw and dowtail saw – power saws like the chainsaw, radial arm saw, miter saw, band saw, scroll saw, hole saw, table saw and circular saw.

* Shaping tools – hand planes like the smoothing plane, shoulder plane, spear plane, rabbet plane, scrub plane, block plane and jointer plane. – jointer and thickness planer – router – rotary tools – gouge and chisel – drill press and chisel mortiser – knifer – rasp – lathe – other hand shaping tools like the adze, axe, froe, drawknife and spokeshave

* Assembly tools – screwdriver – mallet and hammer – hand or power drills – clamps like the F-clamp, G-clamp, C-clamp, miter clamp, bar clamp, band clamp and sash clamp

* Finishing tools – sandpaper that can be used alone. It can be used with power sanders like belt sander, palm sander, orbit sander, disc sander or sanding blocks – steel wool or bronze wool for polishing and applying stain – file – scraper – spray guns used to apply lacquer – brushes for applying varnish

* Accessory tools and furniture – workbench or the bench or table where one sits or stands. This is where the woodworking process takes place Kinds of workbench 1. dog hole or a round or square hole that allows clamping and holding devices to be attached 2. bench dog or a peg that is inserted into a dog hole that lets in the clamp pressure 3. hold fast or the rod that is bent when put into the dog hole. I have a compound bow, but is only interested in target shooting and not really hunting. I'm really not too complicated to get from my compound bow to them. I would find a reasonable price with good recurve pounds good (I'm very athletic and trucks have risen for a long time, I am also a rower, so my arms and back are strong enough). I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions or recommendation. If I do not think I wanted to hunt this bow hunting, you probably would stay with the compound bow, because it has a higher probability of death without effective delivery.

There are two things to consider when choosing the right arrows for bowhunting – what arrow weight you want to shoot, and how stiff the shaft needs to be to complement your draw weight and arrow length. Not every bowhunter wants the lightest and fastest arrows – shooting feather-weights can actually damage your bow. Light arrows absorb as much of the bow’s energy as heavier arrows do, so if your arrows are consistently too light, the vibrations can damage your bow.

According to The archery Manufacturer’s Organization (AMO), the standard minimum arrow weight should be roughly six grains for lighteach pound of your bow’s maximum draw weight (in other words, a 60-pound bow should take a 360-grain arrow). A heavy modern hunting arrow weight about 8 to 10 grains per pound – if you’re interested in speed, you can go as light a 5 grains per pound, but that should be as light as you go.

Shaft stiffness is important because of the pull-and-release manner in which arrows leave the bow. With a finger-released arrow, it has to go through a series of oscillations called “paradox” that begins when the string leaves your fingers – bending of the arrow’s shaft has to be timed perfectly so it passes around the bow without hitting the riser. So, to achieve good flight, your arrow shafts have to be an exact match for your bow and your release style. It’s different for mechanical-release bows – there’s less flex, and it’s almost all confined to an up-and-down movement, so you you can get away with a wider range of shaft stiffness and still get good arrow flight. Point weight is also an important element of choosing the correct arrow stiffness, especially if you release with fingers. Determine what broadhead weight you’ll be using to hunt with before buying your arrows, and then get some off-season practice with field points of the same weight. If you’ll be hunting whitetail deer, you’ll be shooting from an average 20 yards, a distance that a mid-weight arrow can handle easily. A heavier arrow will require more accuracy on your part as it’s slower, but you’ll have a quieter shoot with maximum penetration. Lightweight arrows are great for target practice, but unless you have keen eyesight and regularly shoot at 25 yards or more, they’re best left alone.
